Configure Windows Firewall for Remote Access

Jump to: navigation, search

A firewall program can help protect your system from unauthorized access, but an improperly configured firewall may block your ability to view cameras or access the system remotely over the internet. Windows XP and Windows Vista have firewall software built in to help protect your system, but to ensure your ability to view the cameras remotely you must configure these firewalls.

Configuring Windows XP Firewall

Click on Start, then go to Control Panel, and click on the Windows Firewall. If you do not see an option marked 'Windows Firewall', click on 'Switch to Classic View' in the top-left corner of the window.

On the Windows Firewall screen, click on Exceptions then click on 'Add Program'.

If you are using EZ Watch Pro 3.1, find your 'Surveillance Server' program on the list and choose that.

If you are using EZ Watch Pro 4.0, find your 'Main Console' program on the list and choose that.

Click OK to save the setting.

Configuring Windows Vista Firewall

Click on Start, then go to Control Panel, and click on the Windows Firewall. If you do not see an option marked 'Windows Firewall', click on 'Classic View' in the top-left corner of the window.

On the windows Firewall Screen, click on 'Allow a Program through the Windows Firewall' in the top-left corner of the window.

Windows Vista will currently only work with EZ Watch Pro 4.0. In the 'Exceptions' tab, click on Add Program, and select your Main Console program from the list.

Click OK to save the setting.

Disabling The Firewall

This is normally not recommended, however in some instances it may be necessary to ensure the firewall cannot be blocking your access.

To disable the firewall in Windows XP, first open the Windows firewall just as instructed before (Start -> Control Panel -> Windows Firewall). Under the 'General' tab, place the dot next to 'Off (Not Recommended)' and hit 'OK'.

To disable the firewall in Winodws Vista, first open the WinodwS firewall as before (Start -> Control Panel -> Windows Firewall). Click on 'Change Settings' in the middle, then under the 'General' tab place the dot next to Off and hit OK.

Third Party Firewalls

If you have a firewall provided by a third party, then that firewall will need to be configured. Examples of third party firewalls are Norton Internet Security, Zone Alarm, McAffee Personal Security, and many, many others. Because of the amount of third party firewalls available we cannot provide instructions for configuring a third-party product; please see the product manual or contact the product's provider for assistance in configuring or disabling these.
